Vision and Strategy
Our ambition for a sustainable future
At AXA, we are contributing to building a sustainable future: Act for human progress by protecting what matters. We take action to limit our impact on nature, the climate and biodiversity, support the transition to a low-carbon economy and strengthen our ability to meet the challenges of tomorrow. Our commitments are based on concrete actions, robust governance and a transparent approach.
Operational framework: Sustainability Guiding Framework
This framework guides our actions on six priorities.
Nature:
- Mitigation: Limiting our impact on climate change by reducing greenhouse gas emissions and strengthening carbon sinks (e.g., long-term exit from thermal coal industry, actions to preserve forests), while limiting biodiversity loss (e.g., environmental sensitivity assessment tool).
- Transition: Promoting a fair transition to a low-carbon, resource-efficient economy by supporting renewable energy and fostering circular business models while ensuring no one is left behind and equal opportunities for all.
- Adaptation: Helping our customers and society adapt to the effects of a changing climate by offering advisory services to strengthen physical and social resilience.
People:
- Health & wellbeing: Promoting essential societal health needs while integrating prevention and mental health, with an inclusive approach adapted to chronic diseases, age and gender.
- Economic empowerment: Supporting financial stability by facilitating access to tailored services (for entrepreneurs, small businesses and underserved communities).
- Knowledge: Promoting equitable access to learning (quality education, skills development, vocational training, digital and financial education, diversity) to empower individuals and communities, and contribute to a more resilient and sustainable society.

The AXA Progress Index
This tool measures our environmental and social targets accurately and transparently across our three roles.

For more details on these targets and the results of the AXA For Progress Index, see the latest annual report, Section 4 – Sustainability.
Governance
Our strategy is based on a multi-level system of governance:
- Board of Directors: validates the strategy and key objectives via the Compensation, Governance & Sustainability Committee.
- Role in Society Steering Committee (RISSC): oversees implementation and coordinates major initiatives.
- Audit, Risk and Compliance Committee (ARCC): manages risks and approves mandatory reporting.
At the operational level, the Group Sustainability team and the Sustainability teams within our entities roll out the strategy across all local entities. We track ESG maturity through the AXA Entity Sustainability Index (AESI), an annual internal assessment covering 28 criteria.
ESG reporting and transparency
AXA regularly publishes its sustainability outcomes and progress:
- Annual Report, Section 4 – Sustainability: strategy and non-financial performance information statement.
- Integrated Report: financial and non-financial indicators.
- Unlock Sustainable Insurance Report: AXA’s strategy and local initiatives in the face of mounting societal challenges.
Going beyond regulatory disclosure requirements, our reports demonstrate our commitment to transparency and continuous improvement. They can be viewed in the ESG Reporting page.
AXA’s non-financial performance is analysed by ESG experts: investors, brokers, rating agencies (S&P, EcoVadis, CDP, etc.) and bodies specialised in sustainability.
