Rooted in AXA’s purpose Act for human progress by protecting what matters
the framework translates AXA’s ambition by addressing six priorities organized under two key pillars: Nature and People.
- On the one hand, it guides our efforts to mitigate our negative impact on climate and biodiversity while supporting adaptation and transition.
- On the other, it promotes people’s well-being, strengthens community resilience, and contributes to reducing inequalities in access to healthcare, knowledge, and economic opportunity.
These priorities are applied across AXA’s three core activities: insurer, investor, and company.
The framework serves three essential objectives:
- provide a common vision for sustainability across the Group,
- act as a source of inspiration by sharing best practices and encouraging collective learning, and
- offer concrete levers and tools tailored to each business function.

Our priorities
Our six priorities are organized under two key pillars:
Nature
- MITIGATION | Limiting the causes of climate change, by reducing Greenhouse gas emissions or increasing carbon sink (e.g., long-term exit from thermal coal industry, actions to preserve forests and limiting biodiversity loss (e.g., Environmental sensitivity assessment tool).
- TRANSITION | Enabling a fair societal transition to a low-carbon & less resource-intensive economy (e.g., investments in renewable energies, insurance of circular business models and practices).
- ADAPTATION | Helping society adapt to the consequences of climate change (e.g., upskill employees, brokers or clients on adaptation measures, provide risk consulting services to improve clients’ assets resilience) and build both physical and social resilience.
People
- HEALTH & WELL-BEING | Securing vital needs, while integrating preventing care and mental health, through adapted and inclusive approaches (e.g., chronic- or age-related conditions, gender-specific needs).
- ECONOMIC EMPOWERMENT | Enhancing financial stability by providing access to financial services tailored to specific needs (e.g., entrepreneurship, small business development, underserved communities), addressing social inequalities in our value chain, and fostering economic awareness.
- KNOWLEDGE | Promoting fair and equal access to learning opportunities (e.g., high-quality education, skill-building programs, vocational training, digital and financial literacy, diversity initiatives) to empower individuals and communities to thrive and contribute to a more resilient and sustainable society.
Interconnection between climate and social dimensions
At AXA, we strongly believe that climate and social challenges are fundamentally deeply interconnected. Tackling one without accounting for the other can lead to unintended effects or cause to overlook comprehensive solutions. This is why our ambition is to address current risks taking into account:
- Climate change impacts vulnerable communities: Rising temperatures, extreme weather events, and biodiversity loss disproportionately affect underserved populations, exacerbating inequalities.
- Social inequalities hinder climate action: Communities lacking access to resources, education, or healthcare are less equipped to adapt to climate change or participate in the transition to a low-carbon economy.
- Shared solutions: Initiatives that address both climate and social challenges can amplify positive outcomes.
Measuring the impact of our mission: the AXA for Progress Index
We track our sustainability performance through the AXA for Progress Index | AXA, a strategic dashboard that monitors Sustainability key performance indicators (KPIs) aligned with our six priorities.
