Before joining UCC, Professor Killeen was based for 16 years at the Ifakara Institute of Health (IHI) in Tanzania.

He supported several national malaria control plans and established the urban malaria control program of the Dar es Salaam City Council.

Prof Killeen's research work has focused on the application of new tools and methods to control different viruses (Zika, Dengue, Chikungunya). More recently, he has continued his research on the development of new mathematical models of transmission and containment dynamics of the new coronavirus, Covid-19.
