The growth of the world's population has forced us to closely examine the capacities of our food production and food supply. This was the core theme ("Feeding the Planet, Energy for Life") of Expo Milan 2015, which recently drew to a close. The exhibition aimed to provide an international platform for dialogue and identifying potential solutions to address the food issues we face.

The future of food has also been a major theme for National Geographic for over a year. The AXA Research Fund therefore naturally teamed with this institution to promote further study and initiatives in the field, by producing three videos focusing on the work of scientists supported by the AXA Research Fund.

This series of videos highlights several initiatives taken to find and implement concrete solutions addressing multiple challenges related to food: reducing obesity, improving water and food security, and feeding a growing world population without endangering the planet.

Episode 1: How can we reduce our irrational eating behaviors?

Who has never struggled to resist a tasty-looking hamburger or a bite of chocolate? With more than 40% of the world population overweight, high-calorie foods can be considered to be a real addiction. Dr. Esther Aarts, a researcher in cognitive neuroimaging, is investigating deep into our brains to understand how our reactions to food are triggered. By focusing on individual differences, she is paving the way to tailor-made treatments that can be decisive in preventing diseases such as obesity or diabetes. Learn how Esther's research can improve our health and well-being and discover new alternative methods of prevention, such as mindful eating.
