The Senior Underwriter is accountable for supporting the Head of AGL Underwriting in the day to day management responsibilities to lead the Group underwriting strategy and perform all underwriting tasks within agreed timeframes to meet service standard targets. The successful candidate will provide advice, technical expertise, training and guidance to the entities’ underwriting team in medical and non-medical aspects consistent with AXA underwriting standards and philosophy.

One of the core responsibilities will be to develop underwriting rules consistent with Group Philosophy and incorporate them into Group guidelines.

The successful candidate will also perform audit of underwriting files as a representative of the Global Business Line to ensure mortality/morbidity and profitability expectations are met.  This individual will work closely with the central underwriting team by providing input that will assist in underwriter performance management and identify training opportunities and make recommendations for clear and concise underwriting guidelines that align with AXA’s underwriting strategies and supports profitability of products.


You will mainly be entitled to:

  • Perform all underwriting tasks within agreed timeframes to meet service standard targets
  • Customise underwriting rules of a major reinsurer and translate into a clear format Group guidelines that are consistent with AXA risk appetite/profile and philosophy
  • Conduct technical quality audit of entities’ underwriting performance
  • Understand and support AGL Management Operating tasks
  • Provide a quality underwriting service to internal and external clients with the ability to communicate outcomes well
  • Proactive in gathering information to lead a Group underwriting project
  • Identify trends and underwriters training and developmental opportunities including feedback and recommendations for performance management
  • Develop Group/internal underwriting guidelines, procedures and workflow as needed based on Underwriting QA reviews, sound underwriting principles/process and understanding of product pricing and market centric considerations
  • Builds and maintains collaborative relationships with the entities Head of Life Operations and Underwriting Management team
  • Works on special projects as needed, leading them as the occasion arises
  • Analyze data and presents results at regularly scheduled management meetings
  • Organise and perform technical training at Group level and local entities on hot underwriting topics
  • Maintain a current view of emerging and changing trends both medically and financially

  • Demonstrate a commitment to support proactive management initiatives to increase the sustainability and effectiveness of the Group underwriting strategy
  • Provide assistance and support to the local Underwriting team in relation to work efficiency, technical and process matters
  • Organise and provide training, mentoring and recommendations on key underwriting topics
  • Participate in the ongoing development and sharing of knowledge within the Underwriting Community members
  • Provide support to underwriting stakeholders by assisting in underwriting related issues/ problems
  • Promote the AXA underwriting philosophy positively both internally and externally

 






Skills and Behaviours 

 

  • Detailed understanding of sound underwriting principles and their application in the operating environment

Experience/Qualifications required

  • Minimum 7 years Life Underwriting experience in Lump Sum – death and TPD, Disability Income, CI, LTC, Health …insurance
  • 5+ years underwriting QA experience
  • Expert knowledge and understanding of life insurance risk evaluation and selection process – comprehensive knowledge of life, disability, CI, LTC, accidental death. Health…insurance
  • Advanced knowledge of life insurance industry principles and practices including life insurance operations,  reinsurance practices, product,  sales concepts, compliance and legal issues, claims and distribution, specifically those affecting underwriting guidelines and practices
  • Strong communication and presentation skills, including ability to communicate findings, performance standards, and provide detailed feedback
  • Ability to work collaboratively and productively with Underwriters, Managers and other business units
  • Ability to analyse data and identify trends in order to provide a comprehensive analysis of patterns and training needs
  • Project management experience
  • Excellent time management skills
  • Professional qualifications eg. medical  qualification or formal professional accreditation highly regarded
  • Team oriented and cooperative manner, constructive approach to ideas and initiatives of others
  • Innovative approach to challenges, development of proposed improvements and constructive handling of innovations
  • Knowledge of methods of transferring knowledge effectively for training UWs and Claims leaders
  • Computer skills: Skills in using the Microsoft Office product package in one or more applications (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Access)
