Established over 80 years ago AXA Health is a highly successful company with a track record in helping people in their time of medical need through the provision of Private Medical Insurance. More recently it has also provided a wider set of medical and wellbeing services, typically to corporate organisations i.e. Occupational Health, discounted gym membership. The customer base covers individual policies through to large corporate schemes with a thriving SME business in-between. Channels include broker and direct distribution.

Over the years the business has grown organically and through acquisition. Some acquisitions have been to increase market share and coverage and others to achieve horizontal diversification. With c 3,000 employees, in excess of 3 million lives protected and holding over 30% of the market share in the UK, AXA Health plays a massive part in the health of the nation.

Whilst the PMI product has and continues to be incredibly successful, the world of health is changing rapidly with customers wanting help to stay healthy rather than just claim once ill.  The health industry is booming and the market is flooded with new, innovative ways to support people with their health. More and more customers are willing to self-pay for private treatment and the prevalence of chronic conditions (not covered by PMI) and the NHS’s challenges the market is at a point of inflection that presents exciting opportunities for private health providers. AXA Health is well placed to take advantage of this and emerge as a true health partner to our existing customers and to a wholly new customer base who want non-insurance health products. However to be sure of this success the business has needed to embark on a significant transformation, one that touches everything from our systems, our products, our processes, our skills, our ways of working to our culture. To do this the focus areas are:

  • Maintaining a successful PMI insurance offering but one that is radically simplified and digitised across the whole journey, with more engaging customer features, focussed on also providing integrated pro-active health support.
  • Development of new non Insurance health products.
  • Continued creativity and entrepreneurial partnerships / acquisitions to build the offering horizontally and vertically.
  • Protection of the customer experience but adding in digital elements and a focus on efficiency, experience and simplification.
  • Greater use of data and automation to aid decision making, manage claims costs, ensure the quality of our medical partners is guaranteed, prevent fraud and help with efficiency.
  • IT simplification and resilience to reduce legacy systems, increasing efficiency and customer experience and creating space for greater future IT agility and robustness.
  • Building the eldercare business subsidiary to be a core/bigger part of the offering, transforming the proposition and the operation to be leading edge and make the best use of technology and be at the forefront of presenting solutions to the growing eldercare societal issue.
  • Ensuring our business is sustainable in all ways i.e. we have the future capabilities, we have the culture and behaviours and ways of working to ensure our success, we have the right employer brand to attract and retain the right people.

This role has a dual reporting line to the CEO of AXA Health (Tracy Garrad) and to the Chief People and Corporate Responsibility Officer for UK&I (Suzanne Scott).

The role holder is a member of both the AXA Health Executive team and the UK&I HR leadership team. The UK&I HR team is where we have our shared centres of expertise (Talent Acquisition, Learning and Development, People Services, Reward, Data and Insights, Diversity & Inclusion, Employee Relations, Employee Experience & Engagement). Within the business unit teams (the AXA Health HR team being an example of one) we have the HR Business Partners and an HR Change team, the Health HR team together with the Internal Communications team are a team of c20 some of which are transformation funded and therefore an uplift in resource from business as usual.

The job is a job to be loved, as an HRD it has everything one could hope for: digital transformation, culture, engagement, future capabilities, sourcing new talent, going into new commercial markets and ensuring we have the business and people to succeed. To top it all off it also has an Executive team up for the challenge and for working with HR and internal communications.

The purpose of this role is to empower our people to be the best version they can be, so they, in turn can help our customer be the best version of themselves. This means: the best people with the best skills, empowered to give their best to our customers, proud that they are the best and inclusive of all to be our best.

The role holder has accountability for the strategic people agenda and for partnering the CEO and with the HR Business Partner Team, the Executive team. It also has accountability for Internal Communications for the Health business.

Experience in the following is preferred:

  • Experience of organisations transforming, moving to Agile and an ambitious digital strategy and what this means for the people and engagement agenda.
  • The ability to partner and drive programmes and transformations, with a breadth of perspective covering OD, capability, efficiency, engagement, cultural implications.
  • Leading and inspiring an HR and Internal Communications team.
  • Working in a matrix team, leveraging and co-building Group solutions from COE’s / shared teams.
  • Insurance experience is not a must, but you must have been in a commercial facing (or demonstrated considerable commerciality) HR role and it is likely you will have had some time spent in financial services or in another regulated environment.
  • Previous experience in non-financial service organisations would be an advantage. Multi sector experience is desirable.

Please be aware that this position is a Certificated Role under the SM&CR regime, which means the successful candidate will be subject to an enhanced level of background screening requirements.
