Trading Underwriter – Real Estate

We now have a fantastic opportunity to join the UK Commercial business as an Underwriter in our specialist Real Estate business, joining us on a full-time permanent basis as we experience an exciting growth trajectory and invest in our workforce of the future.
As part of our new smart working strategy at AXA UK, the Real Estate Underwriter position can be performed as a hybrid role working 2 or 3 days a week from home or 2 or 3 days from our office in the City of London. We are very happy to talk flexible working. (If you are applying from outside of the London area, travel into the office would be 2 days per week).
About the Real Estate Underwriter Role
AXA are one of the lead insurers for Real Estate clients, working with specialist brokers, that place their business through the vibrant London Market.
As a Real Estate Underwriter, we are looking for candidates who can help us achieve our long-term ambitions to combine technical excellence with innovate client solutions.
Your role will be to deliver on financial targets through profitable underwriting of risks and developing partnerships with our key brokers. This will require a desire to build face-to-face London Market relationships.
You will underwrite new and existing business in line with AXA’s established underwriting practices and governance framework, using the full range of appetite, tools and client propositions available; and you will need a strong knowledge of technical and trading underwriting, particularly Property bias.
You will need to be an experienced Property Underwriter and/or have a strong passion for the Real Estate sector. You will be self-motivated, and comfortable managing your own workload; this is imperative as you will need to operate at a strategic level, personally and actively influencing our approach and future direction.

This position has been defined as an Insurance Distribution Directive (IDD) role under the IDD regime which means that in addition to pre-employment screening checks, the successful candidate will be subject to background screening every 4 years with an annual declaration in interim years.

Who are we looking for?
This role is ideal for an individual who has a thorough understanding of Property underwriting market and a desire to work within the London Market with a focus on specialist Real Estate broker and clients. Working efficiently, you will have a strong trading capability, with a solid commercial awareness and understand the urgency the role commands. We are looking for candidates with a willingness to always go the extra mile, looking at ways to improve processes to progress forward and the ability to juggle priorities.
You will embrace decision making within your own personal underwriting authority which will require good negotiation skills and the maintaining of strong broker relationships.
Further Skills / Qualifications:
- Pragmatic decision maker with good analytical and numerical reasoning skills.
- Sound knowledge of legislative and regulatory requirements for insurance (including treating customers fairly).
- Proven experience in decision making on a wide range of technical underwriting scenarios within a Commercial environment.
- Excellent risk assessment and risk management skills.
- Strong level of technical underwriting expertise in a composite insurance environment (non-package).
