AXA Hearts in Action has lent its support to the creation of an elementary school in the suburbs of Dakar. This school, named "Daara de Malika" is able to welcome more than 200 children, girls and boys, from 6 to 14 years old. The Senegal chapter of AXA Hearts in Action also built a rural maternity ward with ten beds and a back-up power generator in the village of Ndellé, located about 250 kilometers from Dakar. Rural areas suffer from high rates of prenatal mortality due to a lack of healthcare facilities. Women sometimes must travel dozens of kilometers by cart, putting their lives at risk, to reach the nearest clinic or doctor.
